Kuching, the lively capital and most populous city of Sarawak, Malaysia, is a harmonious blend of modern development and rich historical heritage.

Sakyadhita International

Sakyadhita means “Daughters of the Buddha.” The Sakyadhita International Association of Buddhist Women was founded in 1987 in Bodhgaya, India, with the aim of fostering an environment where Buddhist women worldwide could learn and practice free from discrimination. As the Association continues to gain prominence, its goals and areas of focus have expanded significantly. To address issues of shared interest, Sakyadhita organizes an international conference every two years, hosted in a different country each time.

The Malaysian chapter of the Sakyadhita International Association is in the process of being established.

Kuching Buddhist Society (KBS)

The Kuching Buddhist Society (KBS), established in 1971, is one of the largest and oldest Buddhist organizations in Sarawak. It is dedicated to promoting the teachings of Buddhism through various activities, including Dhamma talks, meditation sessions, and community outreach. KBS emphasizes fostering mindfulness, compassion, and spiritual growth among its members and the wider community. The society encompasses multiple traditions and sections, providing a vibrant platform for cultivating Buddhist values and practices.

Malaysian Buddhist Kulapati Association (MBKA)

The Malaysian Buddhist Kulapati Association was formed in 2012 with the objective of promoting Lay Buddhist self cultivation learning and study of Buddha’s teachings and practice as a way of life to achieve self fulfillment.

Malaysia Buddhist Bhikkhuni Association (MBBA)

The Malaysia Buddhist Bhikkhuni Association formed in 2018 with one the main aims to untie the Buddhist nuns in Malaysia.

The theme of the 19th Sakyadhita Conference, “Navigating Change: Buddhist Women in Transition,” explores the evolving roles and challenges faced by Buddhist women as they adapt to personal, social, and spiritual transformations in a rapidly changing world.

With a focus on resilience, adaptability, and empowerment, the conference aims to foster meaningful dialogue and collaboration among participants. By addressing critical issues and opportunities, the event seeks to deepen understanding of how Buddhist women can lead positive change and contribute to greater harmony within their communities and beyond.

Target Audience

The 19th Sakyadhita Conference, themed “Navigating Change: Buddhist Women in Transition,” is aimed at bringing together Buddhist nuns, laywomen, scholars, practitioners, and advocates from around the world.

This significant event seeks to unite those committed to advancing the roles of Buddhist women, providing a platform for the exchange of knowledge, the discussion of key issues, and the fostering of collaboration across cultures. Through keynote speeches, panel discussions, workshops, and cultural programs, the conference will engage individuals passionate about Buddhist studies, gender equality, and the empowerment of women within the Buddhist tradition.

The event also invites those interested in exploring the intersection of tradition and modernity, offering a unique opportunity to connect with a global community dedicated to shaping a more inclusive future.

English is the official language to facilitate seamless communication and foster effective collaboration among participants from diverse international backgrounds.

Date of the Sakyadhita Conference 2025

The 19th Sakyadhita Conference will be held from 16 June 2025 (Monday) to 20 June 2025 (Friday).

Date of the Post Conference 3 Days Tour

The 3-Day Tour, from 21 June 2025 to 23 June 2025, will include visits to Kuching Buddhist Village, the Giant Buddha Statue of Bamiyan, Gold Mine Lake, the Old Town Night Market, Sarawak Cultural Village with a cultural performance, city sightseeing including the White Cat Statue, a leisure walk at Kuching Waterfront, a Sarawak River Sunset Cruise, Semenggoh Nature Reserve with 2 lunches hosted by KBS.
